Emulgel® products have a formulation which helps the active ingredient, diclofenac, to penetrate into the skin and provide a cooling and moisturising effect.

Unlike products such as heat patches and cooling sprays that work by only cooling or heating the skin, Voltarol® Emulgel® P 1% w/w Gel and Voltarol® Emulgel® Extra Strength 2% w/w Gel contain a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) called diclofenac which targets pain at its source. It works by blocking production of some of the body’s chemicals that cause inflammation, pain, tenderness and swelling.

Products form the Voltarol® range can be purchased in your local pharmacy. Please consult your pharmacist or doctor for further advice on which product to use.

You may be familiar with the Voltarol® brand name from other products prescribed by your doctor. The products described here are different as they can be purchased from your pharmacist without a prescription. Please consult your pharmacist or doctor for further advice on which product to use.

As with all medicines, you have to be careful taking different medications at the same time. You should always ask your pharmacist or doctor if you are taking or have recently been taking any other medicines, including those obtained without a prescription. Before you start using a product from the Voltarol® range. Please carefully read the product information leaflet included in every Voltarol® product pack for further details regarding medicines that should not be taken in conjunction with the specific Voltarol® product.

Voltarol® Emulgel® P 1% w/w Gel and Voltarol® Emulgel® Extra Strength
2% w/w Gel should not be used at the same time as other diclofenac containing products or other anti-inflammatory pain relievers e.g. ibuprofen and aspirin.

It is not known whether topical diclofenac is excreted in breast milk; therefore Voltarol® Emulgel® P 1% w/w Gel and Voltarol® Emulgel® Extra Strength 2% w/w Gel are not recommended during breast-feeding. For further details regarding precautions of using Voltarol® Emulgel® P 1% w/w Gel and Voltarol® Emulgel® Extra Strength 2% w/w Gel, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Diclofenac belongs to a group of anti-inflammatory drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). When the body is damaged, certain chemical signals (prostaglandins) are produced and they promote inflammation and pain. Diclofenac works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, thus relieving inflammation and pain at its source.

NSAIDs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are medicines that help relieve pain and inflammation (swelling). Examples of NSAIDs include diclofenac, ibuprofen and aspirin.

NSAIDs are available as topical and oral products. In the Voltarol® range we have a topical, Voltarol® Emulgel® P 1% w/w Gel and Voltarol® Emulgel® Extra Strength 2% w/w Gel

Like all medicines, Voltarol® products can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
If you experience any side effects with a Voltarol® product, please consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately. Voltarol® Emulgel® P 1% w/w Gel and Voltarol® Emulgel® Extra Strength 2% w/w Gel may cause skin rashes, itching, sensitivity to the sun, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

Before using a Voltarol® product, it is important that you carefully read the patient information leaflet included in the pack and consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. If you require any more information, please feel free to contact us.

Pain is an unpleasant sensation ranging from mild to unbearable. It occurs when something external, for example temperature or physical pressure, damages tissue and triggers our sensory nerves within the body. Pain is mediated by the nervous system and is a complex phenomenon. In conditions like osteoarthritis, sprains or strains, the joint or the surrounding muscles can become inflamed or swollen, which can cause pain. This is part of the body’s defence mechanism. Modern medicines help to control these symptoms.

Inflammation or swelling is a sign that your body is experiencing pain. When starting the healing process the body responds to an external trigger, such as temperature or physical pressure, by swelling at the affected area. This allows increased blood flow to the site of pain which then leads to redness and/or heat.

Analgesic is the medical term for a pain reliever, which is a drug that can relieve pain. Paracetamol products work ‘centrally’ in the parts of the brain where pain is perceived. They do not provide relief from inflammation or swelling; NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) including diclofenac, ibuprofen and aspirin help stop pain by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins which activate pain receptors that send “pain” signals via nerves in our spinal cord to our brain. Some anaglesics work by desensitising local nerve endings (for example, in a painful joint). They reduce inflammation or swelling which is the source of pain. Voltarol® Emulgel® P 1% w/w Gel and Voltarol® Emulgel® Extra Strength 2% w/w Gel contain diclofenac which belongs to the NSAIDs group of analgesics.

Depending on the type of pain you are suffering, you can take specific actions to help speed up your recovery time or decrease the impact it has on your wellness. Good nutrition, appropriate application of cold or warmth to the painful area, resting in some cases, or mild exercise in some others, are well-accepted supportive measures to recover or increase your health. In the days after an injury, you may also find it useful to follow the PRICE emergency plan:
PROTECT the area from further damage – for example stop the activity you were doing
REST the area over the next 3-5 days depending on how quickly the area recovers
ICE the area frequently - to prevent excessive swelling and further tissue damage
COMPRESS the area using stretchy bandage or tubigrip
ELEVATE the area whenever possible as this helps reduce the swelling

Voltarol® Emulgel® P 1% w/w Gel and Voltarol® Emulgel® Extra Strength 2% w/w Gel for the relief of pain and inflammation. Contains diclofenac diethylammonium.
